Paeonia ‘Coral Charm’   –   Herbaceous Peony

‘Coral Charm’ is an award winning, early-to-mid season flowering variety of herbaceous peony which has delightful coral coloured blooms. The cup shaped blooms are held on very strong stems, which can reach 1.2 metres high, with dark green foliage. Blooms are lotus-like and open slowly to about 20cm wide in a blend of coral-orange, pink and peach colours, fading to a buff yellow at the blooms end.

This popular variety was the first major breakthrough for peonies in the coral colour range. It was hybridised in America in 1964 by Samuel Wissing, and took almost 20 years to be introduced to the market in 1981 by Roy G. Klehm. Wissing was also the breeder of ‘Coral Sunset’, among 10 other registered varieties, and Klehm subsequently introduced several other coral varieties including ’Pink Hawaiian Coral’ and ‘Coral Supreme’.

Since its introduction to Australia, ‘Coral Charm’ has become a highly sought after variety and its use in the cut flower trade is growing. It is arguably one of the best coral varieties on the market.

Winner of a Gold Medal by the American Peony Society in 1986, followed by the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit in 2012.
